Needs Statement

There is a need to recognize that a hospitalization is a recovery opportunity for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). Furthermore, there is a need to improve inpatient care of patients with OUD, optimize pain control for these patients, reduce stigma that patients experience during hospitalization, and improve harm reduction education for these patients.

Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Review how OUD and hospitalization are linked
• Explain how to treat OUD during a hospitalization
• Explain how to recognize and manage opioid withdrawal
• Employ a comprehensive risk assessment
• Solve pain during a hospitalization
• Indicate ways to eliminate stigma
• Use harm reduction strategies
