Needs Statement

Prior to the development of FDA approved medications for Opioid Use Disorder, twelve step programs provided one of the only options for managing opioid use disorder. As the prevalence of Opioid use disorder and opioid related deaths has increased, so has the need for treatment that addresses the biopsychosocial aspects of the disease.

Patients with OUD taking evidence-based medications for OUD face challenges when integrating their medication treatment with traditional twelve step programs whose definition of “abstinence” conflicts with taking medications to treat substance use disorders.

There has been relatively little research into the patient experience with traditional 12 step programs and MOUD. However, common challenges have been identified.

Understanding common challenges for patients on MOUD can empower providers to help patients navigate strategies for integrating MOUD into mutual support groups.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

  • Identify common twelve step and mutual support programs, and explain the philosophy of abstinence based twelve step programs.
  • Explain common challenges persons on MOUD face when integrating medication and abstinence based programs
  • Explain strategies for integrating MOUD into abstinent based programs and explore alternatives to traditional twelve step programs.
