Needs Statement

Pregnant persons with opioid use disorders often face stigma, treatment disparities, and trauma related to substance use. By reviewing substance use disorder in pregnant and parent people and dispelling myths this population can have better treatment outcomes.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

• Review substance use disorder in pregnant and parenting people, myths and truths  
• Discuss stigma, disparities, and trauma related to substance use 
• Discuss trauma-informed care and opportunities for non-judgmental equitable care for birthing parents with substance use disorder and their families  
• Discuss the importance of provider wellness and education 
• Discuss tips for compassionate care to facilitate empathic relationships and, culture of respect and dignity while treating birthing persons with substance use disorder
