Needs Statement
High school coaches do not typically have training in how to identify and respond to signs of mental health disorders in adolescents, yet they work with youth on a daily basis who are experiencing these conditions. Coaches are not expected to diagnose or treat students, yet they can potentially save lives and ameliorate suffering by knowing when an adolescent may need help from a mental health professional and how to link that adolescent with help. This module will illustrate what a mental health crisis may look like during practice and how to respond.Target Audience
The target audience for this course includes high school coaches and other athletics personnel.Objectives
Upon completion of this session, participants will be able to:- Identify signs of mental illness.
- Determine signs of a mental health crisis.
- Identify effective and necessary responses to mental health concerns.
- Know what to do when presented with suicidal ideation.
