Needs Statement

In this vignette, the Pharmacist is meeting with a Patient who is potentially at risk of an opioid overdose. The Patient has been on a short course and has just received another prescription for oxycodone/acetaminophen (Percocet^®) to take for treatment of pain resulting from recent rotator cuff tendon surgical repair. The Patient does not think the prescription is necessary, however she is amenable to listening to the pharmacist about how to administer naloxone (Narcan^®) in the event a caregiver needs to use it on her.

This exercise is designed to help patients and caregivers know how to administer naloxone, step-by-step and in basic terms for the lay person. The Pharmacist will teach and model when and how a patient is to administer naloxone for opioid reversal to the Patient, and then have the Patient demonstrate understanding and competency of administration using the teach-back method.

The scene begins after the start of the session as the Pharmacist begins to show and teach the Patient how to use a bottle of Narcan^® (naloxone) Nasal Spray 4 mg.

Props: 1 package of Narcan^® Nasal Spray 4 mg and 1 supplemental patient education handout.

Target Audience

Healthcare professionals in a primary care setting.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activty, participatns will be able to:
1. Describe how to administer naloxone, step-by-step and in basic terms for the lay person.
2. Review when and how a patient is to administer naloxone for opioid reversal to the Patient
3. Discuss how to use the teach-back method to have the Patient demonstrate understanding and competency of administration usage
