Needs Statement

In Kentucky, the Department of Corrections is the largest provider of substance use disorder (SUD) treatment services, but behavioral health providers lack training on how criminal legal system involvement affects clients’ ability to participate in services.  It is critical to understand how involvement in the criminal legal system can be reduced through diversion to treatment as well as the complications with providing SUD services to people in government custody. 

Target Audience

Peer Support specialists, Care Navigators,Physicians, Nurses, Nurse Practitioners, Physician Assistants, Pharmacists, Social Workers 

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Explain SAMHSA’s sequential intercept mapping approach and the six “intercept points” where people involved with the criminal legal system can be engaged in overdose prevention and SUD treatment.
2. Describe best practices for implementing opioid overdose reduction strategies in the criminal legal system from the HEALing Communities Study-Kentucky experience.
3. Recognize the respective roles of alternative sentencing workers, social service clinicians, and other practitioners in facilitating treatment and providing overdose prevention resources for people involved with the criminal legal system.
