Needs Statement

Alcohol consumption is common and with that, alcohol use disorder (AUD) is also common. It is estimated that 20% of patients admitted to the hospital have an alcohol use disorder. Learning to diagnose AUD during a hospitalization in order to effectively manage alcohol withdrawal symptoms is vital to these patient’s health. AUD is undertreated with 7.3% of adults aged 18 and older who had AUD in the past year received any treatment in the past year and Less than 4% of people with AUD were prescribed FDA approved medications for AUD.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Recognize alcohol consumption is common and with that, alcohol use disorder (AUD) is also common
2. Discuss how to diagnose AUD during a hospitalization
3. Review management of alcohol withdrawal
4. Recognize risks factors for severe alcohol withdrawal and use techniques to improve management
5. Review medications for alcohol use disorder
6. Describe how substance use disorders are chronic conditions.
