Needs Statement

Healthcare teams lack awareness and knowledge about harm reduction services, including 1) prevention and response efforts, 2) available resources, 3) promising practices, 4) disease testing and prevention, 5) addiction and recovery services, 6) local and state partnerships, and 7) the current status of the drug overdose epidemic.

In 2020, 2.5 million people ages 12 and over reported methamphetamine use, 53 percent met criteria for Stimulant Use Disorder with less than 1 out of 3 receiving treatment, 32,537 people died in 2021 from an overdose involving stimulants other than cocaine (primarily methamphetamine).

“Binge and Crash” pattern of use is popular. Concurrent use of methamphetamine or cocaine plus opioids = “speedball”. Overdose deaths involving stimulants on the rise – often methamphetamines with other substances, especially opioids like fentanyl. 

Target Audience

The target audience for this conference includes physicians, nurses, social workers, public health professionals, certified alcohol and drug counselors, community health workers, licensed professional clinical counselors, adult support counselors, and target case managers.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Define the immediate, psychological, and physical effect of stimulant use.
2. Outline the risks associated with chronic stimulant use and related costs.
3. Interpret Stimulant Use Disorder (StUD) Trends nationally and locally​.
4. Breakdown the differences between how federal and state laws apply to stimulant prescribing practices.
