Needs Statement

To reduce Kentucky’s high maternal death rate due to preventable causes. What we know: >80% of Kentucky’s maternal deaths & injuries are caused by 3 preventable risk factors: 1) violence, 2) substance use, and 3) depression or anxiety. Current training for providers focuses primarily on pregnancy-related causes of maternal mortality. Optimal training including pregnancy-associated & pregnancy-related causes of maternal mortality for all providers. 

With IMPROVE, we seek to provide accessible, effective training for healthcare and helping professionals to address the 3 preventable risk factors for maternal deaths and injuries in Kentucky.

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and dentists.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. List 3 factors (Big 3) explaining 80+% of maternal deaths in KY
2. Explore your own stigma or bias around ‘Big 3’
3. Compassionately ask patients about the ‘Big 3’
4. Find appropriate help for Pregnant or Postpartum People in your community and thru national resources.
