Needs Statement

Screenings for issues that greatly impact maternal morbidity and mortality occur during the prenatal visits and during the hospital admissions/stay.

What are the risks associated with the timing of current screenings?

• No prenatal care
• Admission screens decrease the options for assistance
• During hospital stay screens miss the high risk time (between 7-14 days postpartum)
• Missed postpartum outpatient visits
• Less than optimal communication between ambulatory and inpatient setting

Target Audience

This course targets physicians, midwives, advanced nurse practitioners, nurses, community health workers, peer support specialists, social workers, doulas, emergency medical technicians, pharmacists, public health officials, and dentists.

Objectives

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Discuss the process of maternal depression and substance use screening in the acute care setting.
2. Discuss the process of maternal depression and substance use screening post discharge from acute care setting.  
3. Identify screening tools for screening of maternal depression and substance use disorder.
4. Describe past cases and outcomes of positive screening identified in acute care or post-discharge/home setting.
