Needs Statement

About 90% of the Kentucky injury hospitalization discharge records list codes that describe the mechanism and intent of injury. This percentage dropped in the first months after the transition to ICD-10-CM coding. A survey among medical coders in Kentucky found that the majority of them did not take a specific training on External Cause of Injury Coding.

There is a need for a continuing education module dedicated to the new conceptual and structural changes in the ICD-10-CM coding system related to the External Cause of Injury Coding and the new coding guidelines related to coding of the injury intent.

The ICD-10-CM education for the External Cause of Injury Coding and the official guidelines specific to this area will provide guidance on the proper code assignment when provider documentation is available to code to the highest level of specificity. Thus, provide statistical data for epidemiological analysis.

Target Audience

This educational acitivity is designed to meet the educational needs of medical coders.

Objectives

Upon completion of this education acrtivity, participants will be able to:

• Locate and review the ICD-10-CM External Causes of Morbidity Alphabetic Index and Tabular List
• Locate and identify the ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines Section I.C.20: Chapter 20 External Causes of Morbidity
• Apply the ICD-10-CM Official Coding Guidelines for Chapter 20 External Causes of Morbidity
• Identify the main term and subterm entries applying the basic coding steps and guidelines to correct coding for External Causes
• Verify and assign the ICD-10-CM External Causes of Morbidity code(s) from Chapter 20 Tabular Categories V00-Y99
