Needs Statement

Rib fractures are common after injury. Historic treatment strategies have emphasized pain control and non-operative treatment as the preferred therapy for most patients. Recent innovations in surgical technique and hardware design have the potential to improve rib fracture care. The purpose of this module is to review the contemporary surgical treatment of rib fractures.

Upon completion of this activity, participants will be able to:

1. Describe current understanding of bone healing
2. Define indications for operative treatment of rib fractures
3. Describe operative approaches to rib cage
4. List the risks and benefits of surgery
