Chronic Pain Practice Toolkit

Welcome to the CAIPEC Chronic Pain Toolkit page! The purpose of this Toolkit is that you and your clinic have decided to improve the delivery of chronic pain care. For successful change to occur, your group must be committed to a team-based and patient-centric approach.

There is a CAIPEC Webcast discussing this Toolkit to further assist you in its use and provides guidance on how you can use these efforts in obtaining Maintenance of Certification (MOC) Part IV credit.

The Toolkit is organized into 4 sections:

1. Transforming Your Clinic Process Here you’ll find a CAIPEC Clinic Implementation Workbook to guide your clinic in the planning and implementation phases. It also includes various links and appendices complementing the workbook, such as educational links (second section below), PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Act) worksheets, sample clinic workflows, etc.
2. Educational links Transforming how your group and clinic manages patients with chronic pain starts with education. Under Educational Links who will find suggested guidelines, links to CAIPEC educational materials, such as webcasts and upcoming lectures, and PowerPoint© slide sets.
3. Resources This section serves as a repository of various instruments you may choose from, other informative chronic pain educational links, the sample clinic workflows, and so much more.
4. Maintenance of Certification Part IV Resources This optional section is designed to serve as a resource if you and physician colleagues wish to get credit for MOC Part IV credit. This section gives you links and pdfs specific to your specialty on how to accomplish this task.
1. Transforming Your Clinic Process

CAIPEC Implementation Workbook

How To Use: This workbook serves as a guide for a clinic to implement changes on how it manages patients with chronic pain. The following appendices complement the workbook. The workbook describes developing a team-based approach and assessing the environment’s culture to successfully make changes in the clinic. There are “ACTION” boxes throughout the workbook that guides the team to translate the planning process to actual implementation, mainly guided by a PDSA quality improvement cycle.

Appendix A: Chronic Pain Clinical Guideline

  • This is a suggested chronic pain guideline. Your team can choose any other preferred guideline. Other guidelines are also provided under Resources.

Appendix B: Chronic Pain Guideline Quiz

  • This quiz can be used if you chose the suggested guideline and if the team decided to use a quantitative method in assessing your team’s knowledge about the guideline. The quiz also includes questions assessing other statements in Part 1 of the workbook.

Appendix C: Organizational Readiness to Change Assessment (ORCA)

  • The ORCA is a validated instrument to assess your clinic’s/organization’s readiness for change. As one can appreciate, it is hard to make (successful) change if the team is not ready or willing to change. Greater effort then needs to be placed on education and changing the culture about the current process.

Appendix D: Participation and Functioning Teamwork Survey

  • The Participation and Functioning Teamwork Survey is used to assess your team members participation and functioning within the clinic. This survey can help to determine team member’s contribution to the team and focus on the aspects that need greater attention and improvement. This tool was developed to determine if there was an impact from staff on patient outcomes, results suggest the level of participation by the team has important implications for patient outcomes.

Appendix D: Sample Clinic Workflows

Appendix E: PDSA (Plan-Do-Study-Assess) Worksheets

  • These worksheets are available to assist the team when the chosen processes and changes are actually implemented.
