Seasonal influenza remains a serious and life-threatening disease, attributing to up to 49,000 deaths annually in the United States. Influenza can cause serious complications and hospitalization in elderly patients or those with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, and immunosuppression.

Health care providers must take a proactive role in preventing and managing influenza for their patients, particularly those at higher risk of serious complications from infection. With the expansion of available influenza vaccines, selecting the most appropriate vaccine can be confusing.
