Appalachia is a culturally rich and diverse region. This free training program focuses on issues contributing to cancer health disparities affecting rural and Appalachian residents. Appalachian Patient Navigation provides patient- centered, community-based strategies to successfully address challenges in cancer early detection and care.At the end of this training participants will be able to:
- Define cancer navigation
- Describe key functions for cancer navigators
- Identify situations where culture impacts patient navigation
- Respond to the common cultural challenges that patient navigators face in Appalachia
- Demonstrate knowledge of how to carry out a community needs assessment in Appalachia to identify available resources and barriers to services
- Develop a listing of community resources available to support patients
- Describe key communication issues related to patient navigation
- Identify skills necessary for effective communication
- Describe common barriers to obtaining care
- Identify skills needed for effective communication
