Biosketch
Dr. Barrett joined the UK HealthCare faculty from Northwestern Memorial Hospital where he had been on staff since 1992 and a professor in the Division of Gastroenterology since 2008. He came to Lexington in June 2013 as Chief of Gastroenterology.
After earning an MD from the University of Illinois, he completed a residency at Rush Presbyterian St. Luke’s Hospital in Chicago followed by fellowships in gastroenterology, IBD, and immunology at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Barrett is the recipient of numerous prestigious research grants from the National Institutes of Health and the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation of America. He serves on the editorial board of numerous national and international journals and has authored more than 200 articles, abstracts, book reviews and editorials.
Dr. Barrett specializes in complex inflammatory bowel disease and is a part of a NCI clinical trial for patients with colitis-induced dysplasia.
He has expertise in chromoendoscopy and the evaluation and detection of colitis-induced dysplasia. Dr. Barrett is one of only a few physicians, nationally, who have experience in this procedure. He is available for direct referrals for colonoscopy with chromoendoscopy in patients needing colitis surveillance.
