Andrew Kolodny, MD

Dr. Kolodny is one of the nation’s leading experts on the prescription opioid and heroin crisis that is devastating families and communities across the country. In addition to his role at Phoenix House, Dr. Kolodny is a senior scientist at the Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University where he researches prescription drug monitoring programs. Dr. Kolodny is also the Executive Director and co-founder of Physicians for Responsible Opioid Prescribing (PROP), an organization with a mission to reduce morbidity and mortality caused by overprescribing of opioid analgesics. Prior to joining Phoenix House, Dr. Kolodny was Chair of Psychiatry at Maimonides Medical Center in New York City, one of the largest community teaching hospitals in the country.

Dr. Kolodny has had a long-standing interest in public health. He began his career working for the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. For New York City, he helped develop and implement multiple programs to improve the health of New Yorkers and save lives including city-wide buprenorphine programs, naloxone overdose prevention programs and emergency room-based screening, and brief intervention and referral to treatment (SBIRT) programs for drug and alcohol misuse.

Dr. Kolodny believes that health care professionals have a responsibility to advocate on behalf of their patients and the communities they serve.

He earned an MD from Temple University, completed residency at Mt. Sinai School/City University of New York, and completed fellowship at Columbia University. Dr. Kolodny is board certified in Psychiatry and Addiction Medicine.
