Biosketch
Dr. Pofahl was born in Los Angeles, California. However, he and his family have mainly resided in the Southeast and Mid Atlantic regions. His undergraduate degree is in Molecular Biology (Vanderbilt University). He is a graduate of the West Virginia University School of Medicine (1988). His postgraduate training in General Surgery was at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. He spent one year of research studying intestinal microcirculation. Following his residency training, Dr. Pofahl joined the faculty of the University of South Alabama School of Medicine (Mobile, AL) where he served as Director of Medical Student Education and Director of Surgical Endoscopy. Dr. Pofahl moved to East Carolina University in August 2000 and has developed a busy practice in endocrine surgery. He is currently Professor of Surgery; Chief, Division of Advanced Laparoscopic, Gastrointestinal, and Endocrine Surgery. He also serves as Vice Chair for Clinical Operations, ECU Department of Surgery. He has served as Chief of Staff at Vidant Medical Center, a 900 bed tertiary care medical center. He currently chairs the Vidant Health Board of Directors Quality Committee. He also serves in numerous leadership roles at his local institution and several national organizations and societies. He has contributed to the literature on the topics of gastrointestinal surgery, endocrine surgery, and care of the geriatric surgery patient.
Dr. Pofahl is an avid cyclist. He and his wife Sherry have three sons and enjoy a wide variety of outdoor activities.
