Dr. Scalea completed surgical training at the University of Maryland. He spent two years studying transplantation biology at Harvard Medical School under the mentorship of David H. Sachs. Dr. Scalea then completed a transplant fellowship at the University of Wisconsin immediately prior to joining the faculty at the University of Maryland. He is certified by the American Board of Surgery-Vascular Surgery.
He is a multi-organ transplant surgeon at the University of Maryland and he directs the busiest Simultaneous Pancreas-Kidney Transplant program in the US.
Dr. Scalea's translational engineering laboratory pioneered multiple technologies in organ drone transportation and he is the first person to successfully move a human organ by drone and to model intra-city organ transportation. These experiments are published in the IEEE and AJT.
As a result of these efforts, Dr. Scalea founded the startup company, Transplant Logistics and Informatics (TLI) that has developed novel technologies to monitor, real time, drone shipped organs and has worked successfully with the FAA to make organ drone transportation a reality.
