Biosketch
Dr. Portenoy is Chairman of the Department of Pain Medicine and Palliative Care at Beth Israel Medical Center, the first of its kind in the United States. He is Professor of Neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, for which Beth Israel serves as The Manhattan Campus.
Dr. Portenoy received his medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. He completed a residency in neurology at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and a fellowship in pain management at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
Dr. Portenoy is active as both a researcher and an educator. He has published extensively on topics related to pain and analgesics, treatments for symptoms other than pain, symptom assessment and quality of life. He is Past President of the American Pain Society, and the recipient of that society's Wilbert E. Fordyce Clinical Investigator Award and the Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Portenoy also is Secretary of the International Association for the Study of Pain and a Trustee of the American Board of Hospice and Palliative Medicine.
Dr. Portenoy is Editor-in-Chief of the J Pain Symptom Manage, an international, peer-reviewed medical journal. He is also an Associate Editor for the Clinical Sciences Section of the Journal Pain, and serves on other editorial boards.
